Costa Rica, Nicoya Peninsula

If you’ve ever wanted to feel like you’ve stumbled onto your own secret beach, Playa Barrigona in Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula is the one. It is one of those places where nature runs the show. No big hotels. No crowds. Just sand, surf, and the occasional monkey.

How to Get to Playa Barrigona

But first, getting there. This is no stroll from a fancy resort. You’ll need a 4×4, especially in the rainy season. The drive? Bumpy, scenic, and kind of thrilling, think of winding through jungle-y roads with random monkey sightings. No complaints.

When you finally roll up to Playa Barrigona, you’re greeted with this gorgeous crescent of soft sand, wild waves, and barely another soul in sight.

What to Expect at the Beach

The beach is untouched, raw, and so very Insta-worthy (but good luck posting cell service is… spotty). Surfers love it for the strong waves, but even if you’re not paddling out, just sitting on the sand watching nature do its thing is kind of magical.

And speaking of nature: the flora and fauna here are at the next level. Keep your eyes open for iguanas, tropical birds, and if you time it right, sea turtles nesting or hatching (cue heart eyes). It’s pure, unscripted Pura Vida. It is a good reminder of why sustainable tourism matters.

Now, a heads-up! There are no shops, no beach bars, or even a restroom. You’re on your own, so pack water, snacks, sunscreen, and maybe a beach blanket.

This spot works well as part of a longer city guide to Costa Rica or combined with visits to rainforest retreats nearby. It is also a great side trip if you are already exploring the Nicoya Peninsula
