The Unique Side of Sportfishing in Costa Rica

For many, sportfishing in Costa Rica is the thrill of catching a sailfish off the Pacific or fighting a tarpon in the Caribbean. But for experienced anglers, this destination has more to offer than record catches.

An experienced fishing guide, Todd Staley, remembers days when the fish refused to bite, but the experience was always worth remembering. One such trip involved hours of casting with no bites, so he stopped to look around—flaming-orange heliconias spilling out of the jungle, wild orchids overhanging riverbanks, and the serenity of nature that usually goes unnoticed. The return trip, which would have taken an hour and a half, was spent four hours slowly unrolling. That is when he understood that fishing was not about the fish but what was around one.

Costa Rica’s Pacific coast is an angler’s paradise and home to some of the world’s best marine life. Humpback whales travel through this destination every year, teaching their young ones how to breach the protected bays. On some days, a school of hundreds of massive spinner dolphins swims effortlessly through the sea surface, taking anglers to schools of yellowfin tuna. They break the surface seemingly out of nowhere, hundreds at a time, swimming curiously alongside boats.

For those who chase the ever-elusive roosterfish or marlin, Los Sueños waters, Marina Pez Vela, and Osa Peninsula offer world-class fishing. Along the way, it’s not uncommon to see whale sharks straining plankton from the sea, sea turtles carried along in the current, or macaws flying overhead over isolated beaches. Sportfishing’s real beauty is in these serendipitous moments—the line goes slack, but the world beyond you throbs with activity.

Sportfishing experiences ensure sportfishing is as it should be: expert guides take you deep-sea fishing, let you get into Costa Rica’s top sportfishing tournaments, and offer the chance to live every second of exciting sport and real interaction with nature’s wonders.

On some days, you’ll remember what you caught. But the ones you won’t forget anytime soon? Those were when the sea showed you something more wondrous.
